Ontario By Bike Industry Partnership
What is the Ontario By Bike Industry Partnership?
Working in collaboration with industry partners, this Ontario-wide initiative will facilitate destination development and promotion of Ontario's growing cycle tourism product. Our goal is to make Ontario a top cycle tourism destination in North America.
Who are we?
The Ontario By Bike Industry Partnership (OBBIP) is a project led by Transportation Options. Transportation Options was established in 1992. We are a dynamic non profit organization dedicated to fostering sustainable mobility and tourism solutions across Ontario. We have a proven track record of successful projects and award winning programs focused on further developing cycle tourism across the province, including: Bike Train Initiative (www.biketrain.ca), Ontario By Bike Network (www.ontariobybike.ca), and the 2023, 2019, 2016, 2013 and 2009 cycle tourism conferences.
Through these projects we have developed a strong network of industry partners that spans four tiers of government, municipal, regional, provincial and federal representatives. Our tourism partners come from a range of backgrounds including: Ontario's Regional Tourism Organizations (RTO's), Destination Marketing Organizations, Chambers of Commerce, Economic Development Offices and all passenger rail providers.
What are we going to do?
The OBBIP will coordinate activities to meet the following objectives:
How we are going to do it?
The goals for the OBBIP initiative were originally identified in 2010, through a strategic planning and consultation process that gathered input from over 100 partners and stakeholders across the province. As a result Transportation Options was able to secure three years of funding from The Trillium Foundation of Ontario. With some of the more specific goals met, the following key activities have evolved out of further consultations with committee members and other partners that were completed in 2015. These include:
The Ontario By Bike Industry Partnership (OBBIP) Advisory Committee is a standing committee whose primary function is to share information and resources that will facilitate destination development and promotion of Ontario's growing cycle tourism product, furthering partnership's goal of making Ontario a top cycle tourism destination.
OBBIP Advisory Committee Participants
The Advisory Committee includes a range of representatives from across the Province that come from a variety of backgrounds that includes: Tourism partners; cycling industry business stakeholders; active transportation planners; connected individuals; regional cycling organizations; periodic special advisors; and cross provincial organizations.
The group consists of approximately 30 participants, incorporating fair regional representation based on RTO geographical breakdown of Ontario (RTO1-13). For list of participating businesses/organizations/regions click HERE.

- Development of a strategy for cycle tourism in Ontario (Strategy delivered in 2017 by previous government)
- Advocate for the inclusion of cycle tourism in any future Ontario tourism strategies, or as an updated stand alone cycle tourism strategy
- Providing a core information hub for cycle tourism in Ontario
- Cycle tourism destination and product development in Ontario
How we are going to do it?
The goals for the OBBIP initiative were originally identified in 2010, through a strategic planning and consultation process that gathered input from over 100 partners and stakeholders across the province. - Develop partnerships to support the development and advocate for the inclusion of cycle tourism in any Ontario tourism strategy
- Advocate for additional investment and support for the cycle tourism sector from public and private partners
- Provide input on cycling initiatives put forth by the Province of Ontario, regions and municipalities
- Initiate, commission and assist with market research studies
- Keep informed, share information on new cycle tourism developments out of province and internationally
- Coordinate conferences on cycle tourism and assist with cycle tourism content at other bike-themed conferences
